What's The Buzz About Bumble Bee 🐝 Jasper?

Have you seen or heard of Bumble Bee Jasper?

A member of the chalcedony family, Bumble Bee Jasper is a beautiful gemstone popular for its distinctive yellow, orange and black bands, imitating bumblebees which is how it gets it's distinct name. The stripes come from the many inclusions that combine to create the stone. They are sulfur, Argonite, Calcium, Realgar, and Pyrite, respectively. Interestingly enough, Bumblebee Jasper isn’t a true form of Jasper at all. Rather, it’s a carbonate mineral. This stone is made up of several minerals that combine to create a truly magical appearance!

Also known as Eclipse Jasper, the gemstone has become a collector's favorite in the last few decades due to its fascinating color and matrix. It is on trend in earrings, pendants, rings and bracelets. You'll find that bigger seems to be better with Bumble Bee Jasper. The patterns of the stone are consistently quite large and require an ample surface area to show itself off! The larger stone, the bolder the look!  There also doesn't seem to be a seasonality with Bumble Bee Jasper.  Whereas it is a bright and sunny compliment to any summer outfit,  the warmth of it's oranges and deep golds compliment anyone's fall wardrobe and the black banding even compliments your winter looks!

The Manakarra Beach on the Island of Java in Indonesia appears to be the first place that miners discovered Bumble Bee Jasper in the 1990s, making it a new find! Shortly thereafter, followed a minor rush of people trying to get more of it. Interestingly enough, it was first introduced to the world on display at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show. Bumble Bee Jasper is porous, easily polished and relatively soft registering a 5 or less on Moh's hardness scale.

Currently, the majority, if not all, of the world's supply of Bumble Bee Jasper originates on the island of Java near the hot vents of Mount Papandayan, an active volcano. The formation of this gemstone takes place in cracks, known as fumaroles, through which steam and gas can escape. Some cracks persist for decades or even centuries, while some disappear within weeks. Since its' discovery, geologists haven’t found any additional sources of the stone. They don’t expect to find any either due to its distinct formation environment. This is an extremely rare occurrence in nature that simply doesn’t happen and it should be cherished, respected, and valued for the true uniqueness it holds. This limited discovery zone obviously makes Bumble Bee Jasper a rare semi-precious gemstone and it's availability will likely become scarce.
