A Desert rose is an intricate rose like formation of crystal clusters of gypsum or baryite , which include abundant sand grains.^[1] The "petals" are crystals flattened  fanning open in radiating clusters. These evaporite crystals form an array of bladed clusters The ambient sand that is incorporated into the crystal structure, or otherwise encrusts the crystals, varies with the local environment. If iron oxide are present, the blades take on a rusty tone such as these from the Sonoran Desert
