The spiny oyster is a large family of mollusks. They are sometimes also known as thorny oysters or spondylids.  The animal is encased in a hinged shell composed of two parts with large quills extending from their shells, hence it’s name.

The Kingman Turquoise Mine in Arizona was discovered by prehistoric Indians over 1,000 years ago. It was a major supplier of turquoise to the Southwestern jewelry industry for many years. In the 1970s, the mine produced almost half of the world's turquoise supply.
